ABOUT THE CLUSTER

The Cowes Marine Cluster was officially formed in April 2003, and launched in June 2003, after Sally Lynskey, the Managing Director of Launch International, had long recognised the need for the local industry to work together in order to help avoid the ‘feast & famine’ scenario that affects many boat builders, for example, working on one-off projects and contracts. By forming a ‘virtual shipyard’, companies could collaborate in terms of shared resources and joint bids and look at ways of becoming more competitive and efficient in the increasingly global market place.

The ‘virtual shipyard’ concept became a reality for Cowes and the Isle of Wight’s Marine Sector, after SEEDA (The South East Economic Development Agency) established a cluster funding initiative in 2002 and a successful bid was won by the, newly, officially named, “Cowes Marine Cluster”.

All of these activities are already proving a benefit to the members of Cowes Marine Cluster. Since its launch in June 2003, the Cluster has steadily grown in size and stature. Now under the umbrella of the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce, Tourism & Industry, additional benefits are now available to Cluster members as they now automatically receive free membership of the IW Chamber. These benefits include Free Legal 24 Hour Advice helpline, discounted travel, Free Legal Expenses Insurance, and networking opportunities

Cluster initiatives are now maturing and attracting interest from both home and abroad. The launch and growth of a successful website has attracted export interest through overseas twinning with the Cluster now being marketed at many boat shows including Southampton, London, Dubai and Beirut.

The Cluster works closely with Marine South East, the British Marine Federation, the Isle of Wight College and the IW Council to develop opportunities for the marine industry.

The Cowes Marine Cluster is managed by Barry Groves (IW Chamber of Commerce Group - International Trade Manager) assisted by Karen Thomas (Cowes Marine Cluster Administrator)
